ENSEMBLE
Dancing together.
Ensemble.
Rehearsal.
The difference between studio classes and rehearsals is so vast that it is almost indescribable without experiencing it yourself. In rehearsal, we are building a repertory of work together, taking classroom technique into a communicative setting, and creating a cohesive ensemble unit. In dance classes we study and practice vocabulary and technique. One of the biggest differences — and it shows up immediately — is that in rehearsal, people are not dancing in unison all the time. In a dance class, each group of dancers usually executes the dance combinations in unison. In a choreographic work, that is rare.
In rehearsal, we practice musicality, characterization, expressiveness, and stage presence along side polishing technique. The demands on the body are also different. In class we usually practice each combination on "both sides" — beginning with both right and left sides of the body alternately. In rehearsal or creation of choreography, the variation is set and repeated only as choreographed. It becomes important for the dancers to recognize that their bodies are identically repeating work over and over again. So, we also begin to "live the dancing life," and take care of our instrument.
